How to Hide A White Elephant
A ‘white elephant’ is defined as a possession which its owner cannot dispose of and whose cost, particularly that of maintenance, is out of proportion to its usefulness.
In this performance I use the ‘white elephant' as an allegory of sustaining life in my economically and environmentally fragile country Barbados in the Caribbean. With natural disasters, effects of climate change, a regressed economy due to the pandemic and extremely high cost of living, the question of the usefulness of living in such a country is ever-present, thus the contemplation on migrating occurs frequently. I transported the the white elephant in a carry-on suitcase from Brooklyn to central park NYC where I slowly inflated it with a small hand pump. NYC's largest immigrant population is Caribbean people.
The White Elephant is an ongoing project, the elephant lives in a carry-on suitcase and is inflated in places outside of Barbados.
